Digital automatic coupling (DAC) is bringing an important component of rail transport into the digital age. DAC automatically connects freight wagons to one other and establishes a mechanical connection between the wagons without shunting personnel needing to do anything by hand. DAC also automatically couples the brake air pipe, power supply and data bus connection. This makes trains easier to form, meaning more freight wagons can be deployed in less time. This can boost the capacity of marshalling and transshipment yards by 40 percent.
