Article: Passengers can now surf the internet on S-Bahn trains in and around Frankfurt
Surfing for free on the local train: things are changing for commuters and travellers in the Rhine-Main region. Now, they can connect to the internet on nine S-Bahn lines.
Once they have activated the Wi-Fi function on their mobile devices, they just need to select the "WLAN@RMV S-Bahn" network and accept the terms of use. Every customer can then surf free of charge for 100 MB per day and per device.
Passengers can also benefit from the single sign-on function and use the Wi-Fi service for up to seven days without needing to log in again. Data protection is of course guaranteed, as no personal data is collected. User behaviour is likewise not monitored or recorded.
We have been going full steam ahead since July 2018 to upgrade the S-Bahn lines. In Frankfurt am Main, DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung's mobile service joined up with colleagues from the S-Bahn company to equip the vehicles. The installation of a computer acting as a router, three modems, three access points, interior antennas transmitting signals from passengers' devices to the router, and two exterior antennas for connections to mobile telephony has made Wi-Fi sessions possible on every rapid transit train in the Rhine-Main region.
In total, over 53 kilometres of cable have been laid and almost 72,000 parts such as nuts, screws and washers have been fitted to enable this new offer – and all within the planned timeframe and budget.
