Article: Apprentices create new habitat for small animals in Wittenberge

As part of the Prignitz Day of Action at the beginning of May, apprentices at Wittenberge maintenance depot impressively demonstrated that social and ecological commitment is an integral part of their training, even beyond their everyday work in the maintenance depot. Together with the Elbgarten e.V. association, they planted a Benjes hedge (deadwood hedge) and a near-natural dry stone wall in the ‘Elbgarten’ community and education area.

Both elements serve as a refuge and shelter for a variety of native animal species - including birds, insects and especially small animals such as amphibians (e.g. common toads or newts), which are losing more and more habitat due to increasing urbanisation. The project promotes the preservation of biodiversity and at the same time strengthens the environmental awareness of young employees.

Apprentices fully committed to the project

The apprentices impressed with their manual skills, initiative and great commitment during the realisation of the project.

In addition, the project expands the possibilities of the Elbgarten for educational programmes for school classes and groups. Experiencing nature and environmental education are thus combined in the long term - a project with a lasting effect.

DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung has been actively involved in various environmental and educational projects for years and specifically supports the voluntary work of its employees. Campaigns like this show how training, social responsibility and sustainability can be combined in a meaningful way.
