Article: From Neumunster to Graz: double-decker coaches in new splendour!
DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung is modernising 21 double-decker coaches for GKB in Graz. From 2025 to 2026, the trains will be extensively overhauled and redesigned at the Neumunster maintenance depot. This order strengthens DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung's position in the international market.
Following negotiations and a comprehensive European tender process, DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung has signed a new contract with "Graz-Köflacher Bahn und Busbetrieb GmbH" (GKB). This provides for the overhaul and modernisation of 21 double-decker coaches, which GKB had previously acquired from “DB Gebrauchtzug”. The 22nd wagon will not be refurbished, but will be used as a spare parts donor for GKB. Prior to the purchase, GKB had already commissioned the mobile service of DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung with the preliminary inspection of the vehicles. Until the refurbished vehicles are ready for use, GKB will start operations on 1 August with vehicles rented from “DB Gebrauchtzug”.
The work will be carried out at the Neumunster maintenance depot between spring 2025 and June 2026. Here, the 21 carriages will be extensively overhauled, repainted and the interior will be redesigned. GKB put the work on the vehicles out to tender as part of an EU-wide tendering process. The award of the contract to DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung is proof of the company's efficiency and is also good news for the Neumunster maintenance depot.
The standard services from Neumunster will initially be supplemented by additional support from colleagues from the Wittenberge maintenance depot. As part of the redesign process, the interior of the carriages is inspected together with GKB to replace seat upholstery, handrails and other components that no longer meet current standards.
The vehicles are mainly used in the Styrian central region and in western Styria. This cooperation emphasises the innovative strength and strategic orientation of DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung in the international vehicle market.
